CAD CAM

Meeting technological challenges? Design and technology in schools 2007–10…

…found that in over a quarter of primary schools and about half the secondary schools visited there were insufficient opportunities for pupils to develop knowledge of modern materials, electronic systems and control, and computer aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM).

Why bother with CAD/CAM?
(it’s expensive and fraught with lesson wrecking risks!)

With CAD/CAM students can…

  • present their work professionally
  • be creative and innovative
  • not be limited by their drawing or making skills
  • modify designs without endless redrawing
  • explore and experiment more easily
  • try out ideas to see if they will work
  • take risks
  • visualise their ideas
  • develop the ability to think in three dimensions
  • develop their ideas before making final decisions
  • continually develop ideas and reflect on them
  • work accurately and with precision

Ofsted mention CAD/CAM as a strategy for both delivering good lessons and for outstanding achievement in Design & Technology yet the quality of teaching of CAD/CAM in schools is mixed and is often dependent on both access to technology and teachers’ skills.

How can we help?

Curriculum Solutions offer bespoke training and support to suit your Design & Technology department – where you are now and where you wish to travel to. We train on site, helping you to apply the new software to your curriculum and your design & make projects.

Software packages we can help with:

Techsoft 2D Design Tools
TechSoft created 2D Design for users who require sophisticated drawing and design features, but don’t want to spend a lifetime learning to use them.

Although designed with professional capability, its ease of use means that 2D Design is the CAD standard for the vast majority of UK secondary schools.

Whether you need to produce traditional engineering drawings, colourful ‘free-form’ designs for embroidery, or smart graphical presentation sheets, 2D Design V2 has been carefully developed to give you all the tools you need – and all in one place.

Pro Desktop
ProDesktop is a Computer-aided design (CAD) program from Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC), that allowed users to design and model in 3D and create 2D drawings. It can transfer a 3D design into a 2D engineering drawing format and also create photo-realistic views using Album Views.

* This software is no longer available for download or activation and no longer supported by the D & T Association or PTC. As it has been donated free of charge to over 14,000 secondary schools worldwide, and is used by nearly 4 million students each school year, we CAN still offer support with the use of the software to suit your individual needs.

SpaceClaim
SpaceClaim is the world’s fastest and most innovative 3D solid modeller, giving engineers and industrial designers the freedom and flexibility to capture ideas easily, in 3D, for prototyping, and manufacturing.

Although it has full commercial CAD capability and is used by such companies as Rolls Royce, Lotus, Siemens and General Electric, it's ease of use makes this software ideal for use in schools.

The creators of some of the original parametric based software (namely Pro/D, Pro-E and SolidWorks) have formed SpaceClaim as a new US company with a focus on developing highly intuitive 3D software. This software is based on only 4 commands ‘Pull’, ‘Move’, ‘Fill’ and ‘Combine’. You do not need the learning ‘overhead’ of traditional feature based modellers.

SpaceClaim for Education is only available from DT Software Ltd. However we can offer training and support and through DT Software Ltd, a trial 30 day license for your evaluation

CAMSTUDIO
CAMSTUDIO...

...uses screen capture technology to enhance CAD lessons and students outcomes.

...allows teachers to provide focussed on screen support directly related to the specific school project, freeing them up to extend designing and advise on advanced software features, leaving learning the basics to video tutorials prepared in advance.

CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs).

The benefits of integrating video capture software into the key stage 3 and 4 curriculum are clear:
  • increased confidence and enthusiasm in using the software
  • greater independence and responsibility for learning
  • opportunities for differentiation: different videos for different abilities
  • teacher support focussed on those who need it most
  • improved outcomes
  • on task students
